Real History of Seljuk Sultan Malik Shah I in Uyanis Buyuk Selcuklu Series

Introduction

Sultan Malik Shah I was among the most famous rulers of the Seljuk Empire. He was known for his sacrifices made for the states under the Seljuk Empire. Malik Shah I was the son of Emperor Sultan Alp Arslan. He was born in August 1055 in Isfahan. Sultan Alp allowed the participation of Malik Shah I in wars from his early childhood. Sultan Alp also taught Malik Shah I to run the state affairs. Sultan Alp declared Malik Shah I the successor of the Seljuk Empire and with this announcement Malik Shah I was made the head of Isfahan state.

Reign

In 1071 the battle of Malazgirt was fought. Malik Shah I participated in this battle alongside his father. Together they defeated the Byzantium Empire. After the battle was won, a poisonous arrow was fired from the castle by the commander of the Byzantium army which killed Sultan Alp Arslan. As per the will of Sultan Alp Arslan, Malik Shah I was the new emperor of the Seljuk Empire. Nizam-al-Mulk was the most trusted grand vizier of Sultan Malik Shah I. One of the children, Ahmed, of Sultan Malik Shah I was secretly handed over to Nizam-al-Mulk for upbringing. As promised to his father, Malik Shah I’s first and far most important priority was the safeguard of states in the Seljuk Empire. His uncle Qavurt sent him a message stating that he was the elder brother and he had a greater right to Alp Arsalan’s inheritance. Sultan Malik Shah I responded with only one statement. İt was that a brother does not inherit when there is a son. This made Qavurt furious and he captured Isfahan state in 1073. This battle was three days long in which soldiers from Malik Shah I’s army switched sides but he defeated Qavurt and captured him along with his sons.

To further comply with the promise of expansion of the Seljuk Empire made to his father, Sultan Malik Shah I fought has constant opposition and fought countless enemies. With every new occupied state, Malik Shah I ensured the safety of people and their property which made him popular among the local population. His greatest strength was his highly trained army which was trained by Alp Arslan. The strict training provided by Alp Arslan made the army of the Seljuk Empire highly skilled and capable of fighting any battle. Hıs entire life, Malik Shah I focused on uniting the Islamic world. In continuation of his efforts for Islamic world unity, he helped Suleiman Shah in his quest of spreading Islam to Anatolia and towards the borders of Byzantine. Suleiman Shah was interested in gaining control and he established a new state near the Byzantine border. For this development, Suleiman Shah took help from Turkmen Tribes. He also promised to be on Sultan Malik Shah I’s side to hold control of Byzantine borders. For Sultan Malik Shah I this was the safe zone between Byzantium and Seljuk Empire. Things changed with the death of Suleiman Shah and kilij did not want to respect the agreements which once again created unrest in the border area. Kilij was arrested and imprisoned by Sultan Malik Shah I to establish peace in the area but this unrest continued to grow as Kilij’s sister took control of the border area with the help of Turkmen Tribes.

Sultan Malik Shah I had a great interest in scholars which is why he had established a separate fund to support them (artists, scholars, and educators). This is how Gazali (Al-Ghazali) and Kasgarli Mahmud survived and were raised in Sultan Malik Shah I rulership. The future growth of the state held very important meaning for Sultan Malik Shah I. Due to this concern and foresightedness of Sultan Malik Shah I, multiple universities and schools was ordered to be built. The property seen in the Seljuk Empire during was the time of Sultan Malik Shah I emperorship was never seen by anyone who ruled after him.

Death

To kill him, his enemies first killed his most trusted person, Nizam al-Mulk. Nizam’s death trouble Malik Shah I deeply. After Nizam’s death, Sultan Malik Shah I was also killed by giving him poison through the caliph or with the help of Hassan Sabbah’s assassins. With the death of Sultan Malik Shah I Seljuke Empire faced a lot of problems. Malik Shah I’s wife Terken succeeded their son Mahmud 1 to the throne, but his other brothers disagreed and a civil war started.
